here's a meme for you
This occurred to me last night while driving home. It may have circulated around here before, but if so, I don't remember it.

Add a comment to this journal telling me what you remember about first meeting me (online most certainly counts; if you have a choice between online and in person, I'll request the most amusing :-) I'll respond to each comment with my memories of you.

And, of course, if you like it, try it in your own journal.

I first met you here, in my home, I think. You came down with Chuck to stay, and although we didn't talk much, you were good company. :)

Ah, yes, that road trip. I remember chiefly feeling an enormous sensation of relief. Listening to Chuck talk about you would cause anyone to expect a goddess walking, and instead I found someone warm, welcoming, interesting, and intensely real.

Thank you again.

I don't remember my impressions of meeting you at first online, except that you obviously had that kind of goddess-like aura on Pern at the time.

I *do* remember, when I finally met you RL, thinking, "Wow, she's actually a nice person." Which is meant in the best possible way. :)

You know, I don't remember you online on Pern. Garou, of course. I expect the first in-person meeting would be at caredhel's and forkmonkey's.

I can still be amused by the adventure of running ducting to the dryer at the Hollenbeck house...

I have no strong memories of meeting you online. In person, I remember meeting you at Graham and Cari's, I believe, and I was surprised at how...approachable you were, I think. Friendly, which, like Tersa's comment, is meant in the best possible way ("Victim of the Myth").

I also recall saying the word "Dramamine" offhandedly and then looking horrified that I'd said it, and surprised and relieved when you burst out laughing.

My earliest recollection of you is probably that phone call with you and me and Cyllan, where your RL name was finally revealed. Intimacy indeed!

I'm sorry to say I don't remember why 'Dramamine' was funny, but laughter is always good. :-)

P.S. 'Dorothy.'

I know I met you online way before I met you offline. Which was at the DC Pern MUSH gathering of 92? 93? And of course the drive from DC to Stillwater. Much good music, especially Siberry!

The biggest problem is that that's the only time I've met you.

You know, I barely remember that part of the drive. Of course I remember the Gather. You were being tall and quiet. Not apparently shy or cowed or anything like that, just quiet.

I'm pretty sure I first met you on Garou, but I have no real memories of that. I remember talking to you early on @ TooMUSH, a bit warily. I've known too many self-proclaimed god/goddesses in my time, and there was this Ambar reputation, so I wasn't sure if you were going to be one of those people who talked themselves up or what.

(Answer: "or what." You've never struck me as modest, but you also back it up.)

I think it might have been Dinomu* drive-bys at first, actually. But my reaction was similar: "Oh, so *that's* the legendary Garrett. Well, let's see."

(It has not been entirely porcupines, neither roses, but I'm glad to know you. I'm even glad to have worked with you, which I can say for far fewer people.)

Well, let me help: it could not have been before the summer of 1986, because that's the summer I spent in NJ being introduced to sex and the Soup Kitchen.

Later, yes, EECS and mit-eddie and 55 Grove St. I still use that bookcase you sold me when you moved out...

I am fairly sure we met in person before we met online (bandykin aside!) but for me you are inextricably mixed up with the aforementioned summer of 1986, which is when I met a *whole* bunch of people who fascinated me, and somehow haven't thrown me out yet. (As if elbows could stir itself to collective action anyway. :-)

Janelle/C'vin/Cat/etc

(Link)
I first met you as Weyrwoman Ambar, rider of Kyriath, on Pern NC. Since I impressed at Ista and never really interacted with you I don't know that you'll remember me. I will note that I was terrfied of you and Amberyl for the longest time. Meeting Amby in real life helped lessen that. I haven't met you in real life and am still wary of offending you, but I also have realized that paging you with cat questions (especially when my suicidal kitty had found yet another means of ending it all), even when your status is "Page me and DIE", is usually safe.

I remember dealing with one of the "chipmunk" machines in the 6.001 lab, that had been left running some program or other, and the disk in the drive was labelled "ambar"... which I recalled having seen over on Athena side, and made the connection... someone from the lab ended up talking to you about it (I don't recall it actually getting you in *trouble* or anything :) but it did mean I paid more attention to you being around after that :)

This may be the hack I pulled with my 6.001 tutorial partner. Our tutor told us how to put the chipmunks in a loop, and we decided, being fully equipped with the idiocy of freshmen, that it would be fun to lock up the entire lab.

I suspect .no one. who was on staff has forgiven me that one. :-)

I'm not sure when I met you online. I knew who you were from seeing you logged in on MIT and Bell Labs machines. I have a couple of in-person memories; one when I interviewed at Oracle and you were in the room, and another where I was standing somewhere on Bryant St in PA with some other people and you came up and joined us. You gave me a really great hug. :) I'm not sure what the order of those in-person events were, but I think they occurred sometime around 1988.

I heard about you for months before we actually spoke since you paged bumblepudding a lot on Pern. I still remember the description you gave of yourself when you drove down with Amberyl, and Emily (or is it Jennifer or Ellen? I can't remember) from Boston via Philly. You described yourself as the large, red-headed farmer's wife.

Online, on GarouMUSH, I remember... Smoke? showing up in the lounge one day, and of course I was impressionable and you were /legendary admin Ambar/.

That may not count as meeting... I think we met in person at Graham and Cari's, where we plotted downfalls?

But one of my clearest memories (all my long-term memories are usually vague) is when Kirby and Ray and I found Eliot the orange kitten.

I don't actually have a working memory, but flashes from my online past suggest to me that when we first crossed paths on Pern, you wanted nothing to do with me (I was relatively new; you were off to socialize in some fashion with Tahnan's character.) The first time we had anything approaching a real chat was on Garou, in the context of creating de facto wizards on the fly... one wonders why we kept on.

I do, however, distinctly remember meeting you, and Amberyl, and... Elise? Some sort of an E-name. Together. You were all good enough to drive down, and you went with Spencer and I to some rinky-dink restaurant near my then-home. You had a substantial class ring that would make a tremendous report when slapped down on a wooden table...

Apparently we were both getting something out of the deal. :-) I was, anyway, and you taught me a lot, sometimes forwards and sometimes backwards. I have enjoyed every moment I have spent in your company (virtual or not). While I don't miss MUSHing in the least, I do miss your presence in my life, or at least that stream of electrons you occasionally aimed my way.

As for the ring, I gave up wearing it for quite some time when I got too fat, and picked it up again perhaps two years ago. Today I noticed that it was slipping around in a highly annoying fashion, which suggests to me that my right index finger is now smaller than it was in 1987, which is going some.

I remember that drive, and Amberyl being on it, but I'm darned if I can remember the name of the third person. The restaurant was a Chili's, which does lend me (to this day) a tendency to smile when I see them. I also remember a later visit, say 1995? wherein I rented a battered Toyota which was promptly named The Bondo Queen.

Meeting Ambar!!!

(Link)
I worked with you -- well, at the same company you worked at, anyway -- back when it was a good and fun place.

During a staff meeting, I was told by the senior manager to go meet you and get information about something from you -- something that the Operations department had been reluctant to share with Engineering. It definitely came across during the staff meeting that as "the new guy" I was the sacrificial lamb being tested with this task. One of the other engineers pulled me aside afterward and asked if I'd met you yet... no... so he started to warn me how you could be tough on people, or something to that effect. It was very obvious that they were a little afraid of you, but no stranger to office politics, I decided to meet you first and then make up my mind.

So I went all_the_way_down to Palo Alto and camped outside your office till you got back and introduced myself. I stammeringly tried to tiptoe around my request. And you were straightforward and looked me in the eye -- I remember that you held your hands up together in front of your chest, pressing your fingers together while you talked. You came right out and said, "well, why don't we just give you [whatever_it_was] and you'll be on your way?" On my way out, I (of course) thanked you. AND, you gave me some Hershey's kisses because I had mentioned in passing that I needed a chocolate fix.

I remember thinking that you had gorgeous hair (I was trying to grow mine longer at the time).

So I got to go back to San Mateo feeling semi-heroic. (I'm sure the feeling didn't last long.)And for a long time afterwards, occasionally I would get asked by other engineers, "what did you do to ambar? why does she like you so much?" which always made me laugh inside: you probably didn't know who I was or what I did, or have much feelings about me one way or the other. But those dumb guys who were so intimidated by you always wondered about it.

I still wonder why those guys thought you were going to kill me for asking [whatever_it_was].

P.S. And no, I'm not cyber-stalking you... I was trying to get in touch with another former co-worker of ours and came across these pages in a Google search. Yes, Google. ;-)

This made me giggle quite a lot. Of course, I am now dying to know who you are (I already know where you're posting from :-) if only so I can carry out my part of the bargain! There's an email address on my "profile" page if you don't want to post in public.

I never know who's going to be susceptible to the intimidation rays and who isn't. I've decided out that there's not much point in trying to shut them off.

These days (in homage to Glenn Trewitt of DEC's NSL) there is a jar of M&Ms on my desk instead of Hershey's Kisses.

And, yes, I use Google too. Even if they did show the bad taste not to hire me after two rounds of interviews. :-)

A World That Revolves Around You

(Link)
Well, this is SO easy.

It was one of those idiotic fire drills, where no one at Mariani 1 seemed to understand what you were supposed to do when the alarms went off. I was in the big yellow square marked for gathering in the event of disaster.

Looking toward the building I see this incredible red head striding confidently across the lot. I was forced to endure the rest of the drill wondering if I could get the courage to introduce myself once the drill was over.

Obviously, I did. :-P

(Oh, for the morbidly curious the Company was Apple, which housed E-World and their test department in the same building. Gah... how long ago was this? 8, maybe nine years?)

Hugs!

I remember that day, as much for meeting you as for being apparently besieged by (other!) cute tall guys I never saw again. It was a weird day. You, now, were dumping energy all OVER the place. I remember that first lunch at Florentine's, and being seriously confused by the sheer intensity of your courtship.

(Not the last time I'd be confused, either, but here we are. :-)

I know for a fact that I first met you online, back when that meant taking turns logging into one of the many dial-up BBSes in Greater Miami. That was, no shit, 20 years ago plus or minus 6 months.

Not a single memory of any aspect of my participation in that community has survived. (I have poor recollection of events in my life; when it comes time to be old, sit on a porch, and reminisce, I'm going to suck at it.)

I do remember setting out on a road trip to Boston (my first college road-trip) to attend Boskone (my first "real" con) with plans to meet you for the first time and to crash at your frat. I remember sleeping in the communal attic, a backrub, and hearing Hounds Of Love for the first time.

I remember there was one FTF gathering in Miami, of the habitues of the BBS I most frequently called, pretty much right before I graduated from high school. I don't remember if you were there or not; I did meet Peter Glaskowsky at that one (he ran his own Objectivist-oriented BBS, IIRC) which was notable when we crossed paths out here in CA in furry circles years and YEARS later.

Let's just say that you blew my mind, thoroughly, and i was a happy gibbering mess all the way home. (And, to the curious, we were both fully clothed...and much fun was had by us both.)
