Best Leonard Cohen covers?
All the music meme-ry running around LJ lately triggered this thought: Anyone want to weigh in on definitive covers of Leonard Cohen songs? I'll start off with:

Concrete Blonde, "Everybody Knows", Still In Hollywood

Anyone have an opinion on Madeleine Peyroux and "Dance Me to the End of Love"?

Current Mood: accomplishedaccomplished
Current Music: Leonard Cohen - More Best Of - "Anthem"

Definitely Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." I also really like "Famous Blue Raincoat" done by Tori Amos.

Re: Tower of Song

Whose children do I have to bear to get a copy of that playlist?

I like the Madelein Peyroux cover, but I am unfamiliar with the original.

The John Cale cover of "Hallelujah" sticks in my mind.

Tori's "Famous Blue Raincoat" is certainly a good answer. One of the two most frequently-played songs in my iTunes library is Billy Joel's cover of "Light as the Breeze" (though I alas don't know the original).

There's also an alternative rock tribute album; I think the best thing on there is R.E.M.'s "First We Take Manhattan" (though there's other good stuff on it).

There's also, of course, unlistenable covers, like Bono's "Hallelujah", and (sorry, Cyrano!) the Bob's "Bird on the Wire".
