Per http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/transportation/12365731.htm

1) There's nothing stopping you from signing up for Fastrak, getting your HOV stickers, and then cancelling your Fastrak account.

2) Yes, a stickered hybrid is eligible for the free carpool lane over the bridges during the usual hours. Make sure you drop your Fastrak transponder into the provided Mylar bag, or you'll get dinged anyway.

3) (Actually, from an earlier Murky News article) -- there are ~53K registered hybrids in CA, so I wouldn't worry about them running short on the 75K stickers available this week.

YAY. This is all good info to know.

YAY some more!

(I wonder if we'll have to renew our HOV stickers and, if so, if it will require an active FT account to do so).

It's not a fee, but a refundable deposit against tolls. I think this hasn't been made very clear.
